Benjamin Nugent discusses this point in his book "American Nerd". He says that this hipster "gestures toward" the nerd, in terms of fashion and interests, because the nerd operates on unaffected sincerity and authenticity; however, hipsters are by definition too culturally aware, so they operate in bad faith.

Nugent also draws a distinction between nerds and hipsters in terms of how they gather. Nerds like clear hierarchies and rules and transparency in their social gatherings, and aspire to meritocracy. They view political conflict as an obstacle to getting things done. Hipsters, however, indulge in political manoeuvring for its own sake, because they thrive on status games and ephemeral styles and trends.
